Why Google searches go to the "Web" tab when AI is restricted
If students are sent from Google's "All" tab to the "Web" tab, this is expected when "Restrict AI-powered mode in search engines" is enabled. It keeps Google's AI features out of search results.
What's happening
When Restrict AI-powered mode in search engines is on, Google searches open on the Web tab. If a student selects All or AI Mode, they return to Web.
Why
Google now shows AI-generated content in two places:
AI Mode: a chat-style AI search
AI Overview: an AI summary at the top of regular search results
Google doesn't let us remove AI Overview from the "All" tab directly. The "Web" tab shows standard search results without AI Overview, so the filter uses that tab instead.
What students can still do
Search Google and get full results on the Web tab
Use Images, Videos, News, and other Google tabs as usual
Is this SafeSearch?
No. SafeSearch is a separate setting and is not affected by this change.
How to restore the "All" tab
Go to Filter > Policy Editor.
Select the policy.
Open Settings.
Turn off Restrict AI-powered mode in search engines.
Note: Turning this off allows both AI Mode and AI Overview for that policy. There is currently no option to block AI Overview while keeping the "All" tab.
